Ok, not the first movie EVER, like the one that Edison swiped to make his short movie. Nah, I’m talking about your first movie, the first one you saw in the theater. Or, if you’re like way young.. the first one you saw, period.
I know not many people read this thing, let alone comment on it, but there’re some of you out there, wandering in like so many tumbleweeds. So let me put the question to you: If you remember it, what was the first movie you saw, whether in the theater or elsewhere? What was the theater like?
For me, the first movie was Bambi. No, I didn’t see it during its first run, in 1942. But I did see it in the theater in January 1988. January 29, 1988, to be precise, because I have the weird habit of saving my ticket stubs. The theater was the Marlton 8 in Marlton, New Jersey – a theater that’s still there, come to think of it. It’s part of a chain, of course, but it hasn’t been absorbed by other chains, which I suppose is good.
I remember that the reason I saw Bambi in the theater was that I actually took a girl. Like, almost on a date, even. And we saw Bambi in particular because this girl was, at the time, in the midst of a fairly strict religious upbringing. Even then I liked movies, so I was amenable to different ones. That is, it didn’t matter to me what we saw.
Bambi, of course, was pretty cool, for what it was.
